KMHS and Local Businesses Contribute to HAWS

Students at Kettle Moraine High School gathered items to donate to HAWS.

Wales, WI – February 25, 2015 –
Kettle Moraine High School raised awareness and items for the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) throughout part of January with several local businesses chipping in on their behalf to raise over $1,000 in cash and items for the charity.

The idea stated with freshman Taylor Zeker of Delafield, who took the suggestion of doing a fundraiser from KM teacher, Nicole Kind, and ran with it.

Taylor Zeker chose HAWS as their charity, pictured here with her dog Trixie.

“She (Kind) always tells us about how much good we can do in the world and how we should give back to help those around us,” said Zeker. “I thought of HAWS right away when Mrs. Kind mentioned doing a service project. As an animal lover myself, I couldn't help but push for the fundraiser to be for HAWS.”

Zeker has a dog named Trixie, which came from a rescue shelter like HAWS.

“I'm so grateful that others from outside our school helped out,” added Zeker.  “I honestly have no words to describe how happy I am. They couldn't have picked a better fundraiser to donate to. I really want to thank everyone who supported my class and me in gathering donations. It was extremely generous of everyone to help out, and it was much appreciated!”

The local businesses that contributed are animal lovers as well. When Brenda Mueller, Oconomowoc, heard about the cause from her son, also a freshman at KMHS, she knew she had to get involved. Mueller runs an equestrian sports website called ChicagoEquestrian.com and the family also has a rescue dog.

“Horse lovers are animal lovers,” said Mueller. “Just about every horse owner has pets at home as well and we love to see them safe and cared for by organizations such as HAWS.”

Marc and Sue Spencer, Oconomowoc, also have children attending KM schools and are owners of Pet Supplies Plus. It was just natural or them to contribute to the cause.

“It’s obvious we love pets with two of our own dogs and pet stores,” said Sue Spencer. “We were happy to help.”

Two Oconomowoc horse farms gathered items to donate on behalf of the high school. Customers of Integrity Farm, a hunter/jumper training facility and Equitate LLC, a saddlebred show stable, collected pet products the shelter desperately needs on a daily basis.

“It’s great when students get involved in causes and we certainly appreciate the donations,” stated HAWS Executive Director Lynn Olenik. “It’s so good for kids to learn early in life that they can give back to the community and make a difference.”

HAWS is a non-profit organization established in 1965 that assists over 6,000 animals each year and welcomes more than 31,000 human visitors annually. As an “open admissions” shelter, they accept animals regardless of age, health, temperament or breed. Their active humane education department offers programs and services that promote responsible pet ownership, preventing animal abuse and neglect in the community and beyond.

HAWS promotes the humane care and treatment of all animals, in support of cooperative humane efforts throughout the state of Wisconsin.
