Eureka, MO – February 27, 2018 – Eureka, Missouri, located just outside St. Louis, is known for its retention of a small-town atmosphere while still providing access to a major metropolitan area, which really describes Midwest trainer Karen McFarland. McFarland, formerly Karen Memmen, is celebrating a breakthrough year out on her own after a successful winter showing at the prestigious Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

McFarland, 33, is now partnered with barn owner Brittany Roberts of Crescent Farms. McFarland’s Edgewater Sport Horses now works out of that facility with her eye on importing and selling horses and building her business after years of working for others. After her junior years and a top 25 Maclay Medal Final finish with trainer Cathy Rheinheimer, McFarland rode as an amateur while she went to college in Boston, then returned home to finish school in Indiana. She turned pro at the age of 25 and worked for other Midwest trainers such as Erin McCabe, Kate Bomgaars, Susan Baginski and Shannon Hicks. She also helped out Callie Schott for a summer before marrying her husband, Tim, in 2016 and since then has been out on her own.

McFarland’s Midwest roots gives her clients that small town atmosphere but she provides the metropolitan experience at competitions like WEF.  After being on the road with five horses, McFarland is traveling back to Eureka with a Championship in the Low Adult Jumpers 18-35 with client Brittany Roberts and Larinto Van De Rollebeek (pictured right), double clear rounds in the seven-year-old jumpers with Larinto and Souvenir and mileage in the grand hunter ring for Completto.  Pleased with the performance of the young imports, McFarland aims to expand that part of the business as well as opening stalls for new clients.

“I really like having a horse come in and being able to make it better,” said McFarland. “One summer I worked in Germany and got the bug to start importing. I brought the first one we imported up to the 1.30m and it turned out to be a great hunter and derby horse for the new owner.”

McFarland is full speed ahead, planning to attend the World Equestrian Center in April and Kentucky Horse Park in May to kick off the spring/summer season.
