Zion, IL – September 26, 2016 – Lauren Schone of Greystoke Farm in Zion, Illinois, recently coached her riders to the Championship and the Reserve Championship in the Illinois Hunter Jumper Association’s (IHJA) Adult Medal Finals. It was no surprise when Schone’s riders Kelsey Concklin, 23, and Meredith Wegbreit, 19, took the top two spots in the IHJA Adult Medal Finals at the Showplace Fall Championships, which was just the icing on the cake. Wegbreit also won the Marshall & Sterling Midwest Adult Medal Finals for the second year in a row with Concklin following in second. The victories were simply proof that Schone’s program is something special.

Schone takes a whole horse approach, carefully considering the horse’s mental and physical soundness. She works closely with vets, farriers and dentists along with wellness therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic and massage. Schone carries a strong belief in equine fitness and flatwork, focusing on basics, not gimmicks or shortcuts.

“I believe that I can get the most out of the horses by knowing them, their personalities, quirks, likes, dislikes, and conformation,” revealed Schone. “I take part in the horses' care; grooming, wrapping, braiding, turnout, veterinarian appointments, farrier and wellness therapies.”

“I do this because I love the horses,” exclaimed Schone. “I love watching them progress and love seeing my riders learn and accomplish their goals.”

Schone fell in love with horses at her aunt's barn in Cincinnati on summer visits when she was a toddler and started taking lessons at the age of 6.  She grew up in the Chicago area and rode with Jennifer Stevens Rudolph during her junior years, competing in the hunters and the equitation, which was her favorite. She then gained experience in the jumpers, training at Brookwood Farm as an amateur while attending college. Schone graduated with a B.S. in Business from Miami University in Ohio.

“My first year and a half after college I lived and worked in Chicago and only rode every few weeks,” admitted Schone. “In 2006, I went to Moscow, Russia, to ride and teach for a month and when I came home I was offered a job as an assistant trainer.  After riding every day for the previous month, I knew that I wanted to be with horses, so I quit my job in the city and became a professional.”

In 2013, Schone started Greystoke Farm, a full service show stable named after her very special children's hunter. She continues her education by participating in and attending as many clinics as possible including George Morris, Kevin Babington, Anne Kursinski, Deb Bennett, Geoff Teall and Conrad Schumacher.

“I cannot say enough great things about Lauren (Schone) and her program,” remarked customer Heather Concklin. "She has an amazing eye for pairing horses and riders and she always puts the horse’s best interest first. Her enthusiasm and kindness is one of a kind.”

Schone’s training program is personalized to the individual goals and needs of each horse and rider. She meets with her customers annually to set goals for the year and then sets the program of lessons and professional rides. Each program is custom designed, based on the customer's goals. Schone stresses horsemanship, safety and discipline. The program has allowed customers to compete locally and across the country successfully, including the Winter Equestrian Festival and the Indoor Championships.

In addition to Wegbreit and Kelsey Concklin’s stellar wins, other Greystoke clients have had great success including Heather Concklin and Savoy, who earned numerous championships in the Modified Adult Jumpers and Brooke Farrell, 13, who rode Mr. Monk, owned by Mackenzie Jones, to place 58th out of 167 medium ponies at Pony Finals.

Megan Templet, Chicago, competed in her first horse show ever in June at Showplace Spring Spectacular, where she won one of her over fences classes with her horse, Goya. Suzanne Dennis and her daughters of Lake Forest, Illinois, successfully showed Dream Boy in everything from the Puddle Jumpers to the 1.30 Prix this summer.

Schone also helps Alec Bozorgi when he is not training with Nancy Whitehead or Kevin Babington. Bozorgi had great placings in Welcome Stakes, Grand Prixs, and 7 Year Old Young Jumpers this year.
