Hampshire, IL – March 13, 2014 – Canterbury Farm in Hampshire, IL is celebrating their 30th year in business with a clinic by accomplished trainer and rider Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, PA. The clinic will be held May 24th and 25th and is for riders from beginner through advanced levels.  Stovel has competed on both hunters and jumpers successfully with over eight International Hunter Futurity Champions and an American Gold Cup win on her list of accomplishments.

“We’re excited and honored to have a rider like Patty (Stovel) come to our farm to assist us in improving riders in our area,” said Canterbury Farm owner/trainer Greg Franklin.  “Patty has a talent for working with young horses and we are happy to celebrate our 30 years in business with this event.”

Franklin and his parents, Jim and Marcia, decided to buy a farm and start a business in 1984.  The family had their horses at several facilities in the area but nobody ran a facility the way the Franklins thought it should be done. The original farm was a 15-acre parcel on Irving Park Road in Elgin, which is now considered Streamwood.  In 2002, the Franklins purchased the 40-acre property in Hampshire and began the plans for a top-notch facility.  The design was a collaboration of ideas, which included some of the design of their first farm. The grass field was designed to train horses to compete at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, which Franklin has done.

The facility boasts 40 -12 x 12 stalls, a 125 x 250 outdoor, 72 x 180 heated indoor, wash stalls, tack rooms, all weather paddocks and a grand prix field complete with an open water, bank, grob, slide and ditch.

“The farm is a great place to train horses,” added Franklin. “It has everything you need for both horses and riders. Our customers love to spend time there. After 30 years in the business you have a good idea of what works and what doesn't.”

Franklin has qualified horses and riders for the Pennsylvania National, Washington International and the National Horse Shows including the Medal and Maclay Finals. He has also shown internationally at Spruce Meadows in the 1.40 and 1.45 divisions and is a certified trainer with USHJA. Additionally, Franklin has his ‘R’ in Hunters, Hunter Seat Equitation, and Jumpers and judges throughout the country.

Caitlyn Shiels is currently Canterbury Farm's assistant trainer and rider. Born and raised in Sheffield, Massachusetts, Shiels rode with Andre Dignelli at Heritage Farm in Katonah, New York, and as a junior, she finished in the top ten in all the major equitation finals. In 2004, Shiels was a double gold medalist in both the team and individual events at the North American Young Riders Championships. Shiels (pictured right) has ridden to many championships for Canterbury Farm since joining the team last year.

Riders and auditors at the clinic will have the chance to observe Stovel’s unique and effective training techniques first hand. The clinic will offer sessions for all levels of riders and auditors are welcome as well. Following the clinic on Saturday the Franklins welcome everyone to a barbeque at the farm for an anniversary celebration.

To reserve a spot in the clinic contact; Greg Franklin at 847-274-1605 or greg@canterburyfarmchicago.com.  There is no charge for auditing the clinic.

Canterbury Farm is a full service facility offering lessons, training, boarding, sales and showing located at 14N200 Thurnau Rd, Hampshire, IL 60140.
