Roscoe, IL- July 9,2013- Showplace Productions hosted a Derby Day at Ledges Sporting Horses with classes offered for Hunters and Jumpers of various riding abilities. The morning began with the USHJA National Hunter Derby set in the Grand Prix ring. The course was navigated by twenty-two horse and rider combinations who could opt to jump higher option jumps for bonus points. The course allowed for wide, sweeping turns to the jumps and distances between the jumps that helped to develop an even hunter pace. The twelve riders called back for the Handy round included all three entries by Kathleen Caya from the first round. Caya and Susan Schmitt’s horse, Conelly, came out on top with a score of 90 in the first round and 90 in Handy for an overall score of 180. Caya and Conelly also won the USHJA National Hunter Derby at Showplace Productions' Spring Spectacular. Molly McAdow was just behind Caya in second place with an overall score of 169 on Lanie Bricker’s Charlie Brown.

The $2,500 Child/Adult Hunter Derby was the second class of the day and it proved to be a rewarding class for Kelsey Cerkleski who came in first on her horse Sent From Heaven and second on her horse On Tour. Cerkleski came into the Handy round with an initial score of 85 and a Handy score of 84, which brought her, and Sent From Heaven to the win with a score of 169.
“I’ve had Sent From Heaven for three years and On Tour for only three months. I liked both of the courses and there was a lot of room to find the distances. I liked the Handy too because there wasn’t a trot jump,” said Cerkleski.
Connor Siegel earned third place with his horse Banderas with an overall score of 154.
“My family traveled from South Africa to watch me ride Banderas today. He is really adjustable and he is a three-ring horse. I’ve taken him in the Junior Jumpers, Maclay, and Hunter derbies. There were a lot of tests throughout the course but overall it was pretty simple,” said Siegel.
The Derby Day continued with the winning horse and rider combinations listed below:
